Having a blood test? Tell the clinic you take a biotin supplement. These gummies supply 6 mg of biotin, around two hundred times the daily value, and high-dose biotin is known to skew several common laboratory assays. It is a testing issue rather than a health risk, and it matters. Full safety notes.

Every Ingredient In Gelagen

The complete Supplement Facts panel, what each of the six nutrients does, what the evidence supports, and an honest list of what is not in the bottle.

The panel

Six Actives, Every One Declared

There is no proprietary blend on this label. Each nutrient is printed with its own amount, which is how a supplement panel ought to look.

Biotin

6 mg per serving · 20,000% DV

What it is

Vitamin B7. It is a cofactor for the enzymes that build fatty acids, and keratin — the protein hair and nails are made from — depends on that machinery. True biotin deficiency is uncommon and produces brittle nails, thinning hair and dry skin, which is why the nutrient earned its reputation.

What the evidence supports

The clearest evidence is for correcting a deficiency rather than for topping up someone who is already fine. Small studies on brittle nails have reported improvement in nail thickness over several months. It is present here at roughly two hundred times the daily value, which is typical of the category.

Vitamin A

630 mcg RAE per serving · 70% DV

What it is

Supplied as retinyl acetate, a preformed vitamin A. It is the classic skin vitamin: the retinoids used in dermatology are chemical relatives, and vitamin A has a long-established role in the normal differentiation and turnover of skin cells.

What the evidence supports

Well established as a nutrient with a defined daily value. Note that oral vitamin A is not the same intervention as a prescription topical retinoid, and this amount sits sensibly inside the daily value rather than beyond it.

Vitamin B6

7.4 mg per serving · 449% DV

What it is

As pyridoxine hydrochloride. B6 is central to protein metabolism — more than a hundred enzymes depend on it — and hair and nails are almost entirely protein.

What the evidence supports

A well-characterised essential nutrient. Very high intakes of B6 sustained over long periods have been associated with nerve symptoms, which is worth knowing if you take other supplements containing it as well.

Vitamin B12

6 mcg per serving · 250% DV

What it is

As methylcobalamin, a form the body can use directly rather than having to convert. B12 is required for making new cells, and skin is among the fastest-dividing tissues in the body.

What the evidence supports

Essential, and genuinely low in a fair number of people — particularly anyone eating little or no animal food, and more commonly with age as absorption declines. This is one of the ingredients most likely to be filling a real gap.

Folate

442 mcg DFE per serving · 111% DV

What it is

Vitamin B9, working in the same pathway as B12. Together they run the cell-division machinery, which for a tissue that replaces itself monthly is not a small job.

What the evidence supports

Essential and well studied. Anyone who is pregnant or trying to conceive should be talking to their doctor about folate intake anyway — and about the vitamin A in this formula at the same time.

Pantothenic acid

5.2 mg per serving · 104% DV

What it is

Vitamin B5, as d-calcium pantothenate. It is a component of coenzyme A, which sits at the centre of fat metabolism — including the lipids that make up the skin's own moisture barrier.

What the evidence supports

Essential, widely distributed in food, and deficiency is rare. Its derivative panthenol is a very common moisturising ingredient in topical skincare, which is where its reputation for skin comfort comes from.

What is not in it

Worth stating as clearly as what is, because a great many people arrive at a product called Gelagen expecting one specific ingredient.

  • No collagen. The name suggests it and the panel does not contain it.
  • No hyaluronic acid, which is the other ingredient people expect in a skin supplement.
  • No vitamin C, vitamin E or zinc, all common in this category.
  • No proprietary blend — which is the good news in this list. Everything present is present at a stated amount.

Biotin at 20,000% deserves a sentence of its own

Six milligrams is roughly two hundred times the daily value. That is not unusual for a beauty supplement and it is not a toxicity concern — biotin is water soluble and the excess leaves in urine.

What it is, is a laboratory problem. High-dose biotin interferes with a range of common blood tests, including some thyroid and cardiac assays, and can push a result high or low depending on the test. Tell any clinic taking your blood that you use a biotin supplement. The safety page covers this properly.

Reading the daily values

A percentage in the right-hand column means an official reference intake exists for that nutrient — which is true of all six here, because they are all vitamins rather than botanical extracts. That is a genuine advantage of a formula like this one. There is nothing to guess at.

A figure above 100 percent is not automatically better. For water-soluble vitamins like the B group, surplus is largely excreted. For fat-soluble vitamin A, surplus accumulates, which is exactly why the vitamin A here sits at 70 percent rather than 700.

Ingredient questions

It is a very high multiple of the daily value, and biotin has no established upper limit because excess is excreted rather than stored. The practical issue is not toxicity, it is that high-dose biotin can skew laboratory blood tests. Tell any clinic taking your blood.

Because vitamin A is fat soluble and accumulates, so a sensible formula keeps it well inside the daily value rather than far beyond it. 70 percent is a deliberate, conservative figure.

No. Those three appear in a great many skin supplements and none of them is in this one. The panel on this page is the complete list.

Corn syrup, cane sugar, pectin, citric acid, natural flavour, sodium citrate, tapioca starch and beet root extract. Pectin is a fruit fibre, which is why the base is not gelatin.

They are transcribed from the brand's own published Supplement Facts panel. Always check the bottle you receive against them — if the two differ, your bottle is the authority and we would like to hear about it.

Before you start

Gelagen is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and it is not a treatment for acne, eczema, psoriasis, hair loss or any other diagnosed condition. Not for anyone under 18. If you are pregnant, may become pregnant or are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor first — this formula contains preformed vitamin A. The gummies contain cane sugar and corn syrup, and the biotin in them can interfere with blood tests. Everything we know sits on the safety page.
